Jul 31, 1013 aircraft introduction: Piaggio Aero – P180 Avanti II

History of this company dates back to 1884 when the company was founded by Rinaldo Piaggio and first activities were in naval furnishing and railway work. Aircraft manufacturing started in 1912 with helicopters.

In the 1920’s the P1 model was introduced in to the market following a phase of inventions and active developments resulting in various speed records at that time. Advanced technologies and improvements in aero technology lead to the speed shaped fuselage of the P7. Studies for the P180 started in 1979 resulting in the market introduction in 1990 with the P180 Avanti.

The acquisition of Rinaldo Piaggio Mechanical and Aeronautics Industries in 1998 by engineer Piero Ferrari (Vice President of Ferrari S.p.A.), who is its President, and engineer Josè Di Mase lead to the formation of Piaggio Aero. Advanced technology, experience and a strong commitment to research, combined with innovative style, have resulted in the company’s international success and have made it a constantly growing corporation in the business aviation and aeronautical engine sectors.

Highly prestigious names have invested in Piaggio Aero Industries S.p.A.over the years. Its shareholders’ structure is composed by the Ferrari and Di Mase families, Mubadala Aerospace – a Business Unit of the Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Development Company and Tata Limited, a British company in the Tata Group.

The first striking feature one notice aside of the very elegant aerodynamic design is the front fixed Canard wing. This uplifting wing is also helping to reduce weight and drag and contributes to an even, uninterrupted laminar air flow. The second are the push configuration of the propellers facing the backside of the wing. This configuration prevents propeller turbulences from interfering the wing aerodynamics, hence resulting in a lower drag and significantly higher performances compared to forward facing propellers
